Prof. dr. Avelino Corma (ITQ, Valencia) nominated as Doctor Honoris Causa at TUDelft
On the occasion of the171st Dies Natalis of TUDelft and the nomination of
prof. dr. Avelino Corma, a special Dies Symposium is organised on the 10th of January 2013. Young scientists from Dutch academia will give their view on the significance of structural aspects in catalysis. This symposium will be closed with a lecture of the recipient.

Zeolites are essentially nano-testtubes. They are built from materials that are structurally related to quartz, but which contain periodic arrays of holes whose dimensions are comparable to small molecules. They are excellent catalysts, molecular sieves and ion-exchange media. They are used heavily in the petrochemical industry, and can be found in most households in washing detergents, double-glazed windows and some cat litters. Although not a household word, zeolites are an essential part of our lives. Over 50% of gasoline (petrol) has been in contact with a zeolite. Because of their usefulness, there is considerable effort to make new zeolites by random synthetic discovery. Consequently, their discovery rate is
slow. In this talk, I will describe a rational approach to the design of new zeolites that uses graph combinatorics and global optimization methods. At present, we have identified over 3 million new hypothetical structures. The goal is to reduce this catalog to a shortlist of designer zeolites, whose properties are known ahead of synthesis, and whose methods of synthesis can be prescribed.
In addition, Mike Treacy will give a plenary lecture on Fluctuation Microscopy at the yearly symposium of the Dutch Microscopy Society.
Date: Nov 10, Lunteren.
One-day registration for this symposium was possible at: www.microscopie.nl -> fall meeting
Scientists from Academia and Industry are invited to participate to the annual meeting of the Dutch Zeolite Association, to be held at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel in Brussels, on October 31 2008. A plenary lecture will be given by Dr. Giuseppi Bellussi, the new IZA Ambassador, and the recipient of the 2007 IZA Award. Besides 7 invited lectures on topics like novel hybrid materials, MOF materials, industrial applications, synthesis, characterization etc., a poster session is organized. For more information please visit the website.
At the International Zeolite symposium organised in his honour at Delft University of Technology, 19 October 2007, Koos Jansen was awarded the first honorary membership of the International Zeolite Association.
Simultaneously he received the honorary membership of the DZA.
The international symposium on zeolites brought to Delft experts on zeolites, mesoporous materials and membranes from all over the world. Aspects of zeolite frameworks, synthesis and characterisation, and applications in catalysis, sorption and membranes were discussed in invited lectures and posters.
